Prof. Mark Smith

Prof. Mark S. Smith is the author/illustrator of The Art of Flash Animation: Creative Cartooning, and The Struggling Cartoonist. He has also illustrated The Lost World Adventures (2001) and Secret of The Creaky Shack (2020), along with The Apologetics Press Dinosaur Coloring Book.

Upon viewing the trailer for Who Framed Roger Rabbit shortly after his high school graduation, Mark exclaimed, “Animation! That’s what I wanna do for a living!” Having built and performed puppets for nearly a decade at that point, he made the transition of transferring his goofy voice skills to hand-drawn characters. Shortly after obtaining his degree in Graphic Design (a thinly-veiled excuse to repeat the college’s single course in Video Animation three times), he was offered an evening adjunct teaching position at Auburn University Montgomery. During the day he worked at Montgomery TV stations like Alabama Public Television and the local ABC affiliate. After his station’s news department was shut down, he was promoted to Creative Services Director. Nearly a year later, his wife got a job offer at an architectural firm near Atlanta. Prof. Mark’s first thought was, “Hey! There’s a whole animation network out there…” He soon found himself teaching animation classes literally across the street from Cartoon Network. Prof. Mark now teaches animation, and Computer Application in Art classes at Kennesaw State.
