A year ago I saw a video that made me ponder several questions I had never truly thought about before. “Would I want to live forever if I became what most people were afraid of? Would the benefits of immortality far outweigh the losses I would experience of friends and family who would pass on before me? I then began to consider, if I did become this thing I most certainly had no choice in becoming, what time period in history and what professions during that time would make it the most difficult? Thus began the development of my four main characters set in 1793–a doctor, a preacher, an orphaned father and a self-entitled Frenchman who couldn’t care less.
Having edited books for other best-selling authors for years, I knew that I wanted my characters to stand out in their interactions and dialogue, allowing them to naturally go through things you or I might deal with on a daily basis, as well as consider several other philosophical topics we might discuss along the way. I also wanted to be discreet in their disability/transformation and habits. I am not a blood and gore kind of person even though this particular genre can lend itself to that and since I teach teenagers, I wanted a book I could recommend to them without regret.
What resulted thereafter was “No Place For Us” by JC King. Written and planned out by a multi-generational mother/daughter team that allowed a unique perspective to many levels of the story. I hope you will consider reading it, as well, and share with me who your favorite character ended up being. There are two books so far with a third to be released next year, and though they are both standalones, you will want to read them in order to avoid unwanted spoilers.
